Mid Week Update

WELCOME BACK!!!

Yeah, you've heard all the excuses before.I know, I know. I wont bore you with any details. Lets just say time has been scarce and we'll leave it at that. Today is kinda of a mixed bag,so hope you enjoy it!

Batman Begins:Again

Earlier today, Warner Bros announced that the sequel to last years hit (And my favorite movie of 2005) "Batman Begins" will go into production in early 2007.

The film, titled "The Dark Knight" will star Christian Bale, once again donning the batsuit and Christopher Nolan again directing. The big news however is Heath Ledger has been cast as "The Joker". Brokeback Joker? j/k

Reaction to that news has been mostly positive and although it might seem like strange casting, I'm sure Ledger will have alot of fun in this role.

Although no release date has been announced yet, WB will probably be shooting for a Summer 2008 release on this one.

Stay tuned.

Superman Returns II

Returns 2009?

Bryan Singer has also confirmed that he is in talks with Warner Bros. to direct and write the sequel to this years "Superman Returns." If all goes well, Singer hopes to have the movie in theatres by Summer 2009 and said that it will have an "alien villain" in it. I'm hoping for either "Brainiac" or "Darkseid". I guess we'll find out in about 3 years. ;-)

Chappelle's Show Thoughts

So now that "Chappelle's Show: Season 3" has finally debut, fans everywhere get their wish of more Dave Chappelle comedy goodness. But was it worth the wait? So far, the sketches have been fairly mild in the laughs category IMO.

With the exception of his Tupac parody (which had me CRACKING UP), this show has seen pretty passable and bland. Maybe its because Dave's heart wasnt really in it anymore? Who knows. I havent finished watching all of the skits yet, but so far it seems like releasing the so called "Lost Episodes" have hurt the legacy of the series.

OK, I apologize for the short update. I know I never finished the "Superman vs Batman" script/story. I'm working on getting that one up here soon. Hopefully this will be begining of regular updates again on the "Two Minute Drill". Til the next time!

Monday Update

OK, OK, is this thing on? Been awhile I know. Lets just say news has been slow in coming. Well, not so much news as "Intersting" things to write about. Hopefully though the dry spell isnt TOO long this time around. Lets get started.

"Yo-Ho, Yo-Ho, TONS of cash for me!!"

Captain Jack is Back!

"Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" took over theatres this weekend and came away with a HUGE opening. The film took in a record $132 million over the three day weekend. This shatters the old record of $115 million set by "Spider-Man" back in 2002.

Industry experts had predicted a big opening, but nobody thought it would do so well.

At the midnite screening on Thursday night/Friday I had a feeling it was going to do big numbers. My estimate though put it at $85-95 million. To say I was "way off" would be an understatment.

Kudos to Disney and Johnny Depp on this amazing opening. I'll more on this opening later in the column. ;-)

More Pirates!

Just some tidbits on the franchise:

As the second film rakes in the big cash, talk is already begining on what might happen in "Pirates 3" the early teaser poster hints at an "Asian" connection.

The tenative title for "Pirates 3" is "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End". This may change however, so dont hold me to that.

Disney hopes to make more "Pirates" movies after the third one is released next year. The plan is to keep interest in the "Pirates" franchise high enough so that the public doesnt forget about "Captain Jack Sparrow" and his crew. Johnny Depp has stated in the past that he loves playing Jack Sparrow so much that he wouldnt mind playing him for as often as they keep making movies. So, possibly in 2010 or later we might be seeing a "Pirates 4".

2007 in Movies

With the release of "Dead Man's Chest", the last "Big" Summer movie has hit theaters.Sure, there's still good movies left to release such as "The Lady in the Water" and my favorite "Snakes On A Plane" (HAHA) but this was the last "Blockbuster" to be released this Summer. Next Summer will be an even larger in terms of HUGE movies. So far we've got "Fantastic Four 2", "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix", "Spider-Man 3", "Pirates 3", "Transformers", "The Simpsons Movie" and more.

What do YOU want to see in 2007?

We'll see which movie reigns supreme next year

Weekend Box Office

1) Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, $132.0 Mil: You all know about the record already so I wont rehash that. Instead I'll give you my mini reiview. I've heard alot of people say that this movie is basically the same as the first one, but with different villains this time. I agree that some of the action seemed similar to the first, but in now way is this the same film. "Dead Man's Chest" topped the original in so many ways. It did suffer a bit from "Middle Movie Syndrome" in that this is basically just setting up the third film, but its a great "middle movie" one on par with "The Towers" of the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy if you ask me. What I'm saying is, it makes you WANT to see the third one. Highly Recommended.

2) Superman Returns, $21.8 mil: Drops off from last week, but that was expected. Now, I never got a chance to post my thoughts about Superman on here and now that I've had time to think about it, I'll do it today: I really liked this movie. My hopes were really high for this film and I cant say I was completley disappointed. It wasnt the BEST superhero movie, but it was very good. Considering there hasnt been a Superman movie for many years, I would say this is a good start. My only thoughts for the upcoming sequel are: Give us a supervillain other than Lex Luthor and more action sequences please. ;-)

3)The Devil Wears Prada, $15.6 mil: A nice little surprise in this movie season. I think this is the perfect movie to release during the summer since every film out there seems to be geared towards the male audience. This one offers a change of pace to the females and couples that dont want to see another big budget movie.

4) Click, $12.0 mil: Another Adam Sandler hit. With a few exceptions, Sandler hasnt really had a "bomb" in a years. I think as long as he keeps maing these types of movies that appeal to all the demographics he'll be just fine.

5) Cars, $10.3 mil: Did Pixar's streak finally end? "Cars" isnt exactly a bomb, but it isnt doing as well as other recent Pixar releases. As of now, it stands at $205 million and probably will top off somewhere between $250-$260.

OK, that will do it for now. Hope you enjoyed the update. Til the next time

Back from Vacation Update!!

HELLO EVERYBODY!!! Hope you are all doing good. Now that I'm back from vacation, hopefully I can update this thing more frequently. OK, lots of stuff in this one, so lets get to it!

Spider-Man 3 TEASER!!

Earlier today Sony Pictures unvieled the teaser trailer for "Spider-Man 3". Below are some screen captures from the trailer:

Nope thats not tar.its the alien costume fusing with Spider Man

SANDMAN!!!

Hmm, possible conflict??

Some comments about the teaser: The trailer DOES NOT show "Venom", however it does show Topher Grace as Eddie Brock. Oh and there are quick (I mean really quick!! I tried to screen cap it but no luck) shots of the "Green Goblin" wearing a black costume it looks like.

Movie opens May 4th, 2007!

Green, Lean and back on the Screen!

Next year a familiar franchise will return to the big screen. "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" will release next summer. It will be a CGI movie with some live action stuff. Here is the teaser poster

Heroes on a half shell! TURTLEPOWER!!

TURTLES COUNT IT OFF!!! hehehehe

DEAD MEN..TELL "NEW" TALES!!

Disney released some shots of the new animatronic figures inside Disneyland's "Pirates of the Carribean". Check em out below:

Johnny and Johnny

OK, I'm sorry, but this one sucks. I dont think it looks like Capt Barbosa.

Initial reports about the opening of the ride yesterday are fairly positive. Although according to several "Mice Chat" posts the line after opening was 105 minutes and stretched ALL THE WAY to the Emporium at one point!!

If you're heading out this weekend be warned that crowds will probably be huge because of the holiday weekend. And excercise patience if you're waiting in that "Pirates" line. Keep in mind that "Pirates" was built as a high capacity ride, so your wait may not be as long as the board says it is.

OK, that will do it for this update! Hope you enjoyed it. Hopefully more updates later this week!! til the next time!

Mid Week Update

Welcome back to the Drill!!! Again, with the skimpy updates I know. Its gonna be worse soon. I'll be going to Japan this weekend for two weeks and I dont think I'll have time to update again until I get back. But we'll see! On with the show!

Michael Myers Returns

It was announced earlier this week that Rocker/Film Maker Rob Zombie would be bringing back the "Halloween" franchise and resurrecting Michael Myers.

Zombie will write and direct the new movie which will be a re imagining of the character and story. It wont be a straight up remake per se, but more a brand new movie with a new storyline explaining Michael Myers.

"The look and the feel is going to be completely different," Zombie said in an interview. "'Halloween' started off as a very terrifying concept, a terrifying movie. But over the years, Michael Myers has become a friendly Halloween mask. When it came to the point where you could buy a Michael Myers doll that was cute-looking and press its stomach and play the 'Halloween' theme, you knew the scare factor was gone

Although he'll be changing the story and making it more realistic, Zombie stated that the white mask will remain.

The movie will debut sometime in October of 2007.

X-Men 4?? Sort of...

Well by now "X-Men: The Last Stand" has been making all sorts of cash and the question around Hollywood and comic book circles is if this really was "The Last Stand" for the franchise. The answer is "yes" and "No".

Avi Arad from Marvel Studios has stated that instead of making "X4" they will instead focus on two spin-off movies. The first of these will be based on "Wolverine".

It will be part origin story, part continuation of the "X-Men" franchise. Some of the characters from the movie will be in the spinoff so it should be interesting. This film is scheduled to go into production next year with a possible 2008 release.

The other spinoff would be a "Magneto" origin story film. This one is still in the planning stages, but Ian McKellen is already confirmed for it. As far as release dates, no one is sure yet.

So there you have it. As of right now, NO "X4" but some Hollywood Insiders are saying that they would be SHOCKED if we didnt see X4 green-lit sometime soon. Especially if "The Last Stand" continues to put up huge numbers. I guess we'll have to wait and see!

Superman Returns..for 2 1/2 Hours

Warner Bros has gone on record that "Superman Returns" will have a run time of 2 hours and 33 minutes. Also several theatres will be showing "Superman" @ 10pm on the 27th so check those listings.

OK that will do it for now. MAYBE 1 more update, no promises though. Til the next time!

Mid Week Update

Looks who's finally back from the dark side. ;-) Greetings everyone and welcome back to oft delayed "Two Minute Drill." I thought for sure I'd be able to update this thing more often, but time just isnt on my side. Pretty cool update today so lets get to it shall we?

Dead Men Tell NEW Tales..UPDATE!!

With a little bit less than a month to go, the changes to the "Pirates of the Caribbean" attraction at Disneyland have finally solidified. If you dont want to know what happens on the ride go ahead and skip this whole section. Otherwise read on and see what awaits ye when the ride opens June 26th.

(A Special thanks to Al Lutz from Miceage for the following info)

As visitors to the ride enter the building they'll find the familiar queue and flume with boats floating towards the loading dock. The fiber optic treasure map installed over a decade ago has been removed and replaced with a more natural beach setting. (The notoriously leaky roof in this area has been fixed, after plumbers finally traced the water to a leak in the terrace fountain in the Disney Gallery above.) The Laffite's Landing loading area itself has a few extra props placed about, and a redesigned wheelchair area on the unload side, but will look quite similar. As you leave the dock, try to look up to get a peek at the control tower that's been newly outfitted with a wall of video screens connected to dozens of cameras that can now zero in on just about every corner of the ride.

As the bateaux float out into the bayou, the ride will begin just as it has for thirty-nine years. Although sharp-eyed visitors will likely sense the lighting and audio changes made throughout the attraction as they float past the Blue Bayou restaurant in two feet of water. They replaced over 250 audio speakers throughout the entire multi-level facility, and with the newly cleaned up and digitized audio tracks WDI has been tinkering with, the chirping crickets and croaking frogs coming through all of that new equipment have never sounded better.

The trip down the first big twenty-one degree fifty-two foot drop into the caverns is much the same, but as the bateaux round the first bend and head towards the second thirty-seven foot drop deeper into the caverns, the new lighting will be most appa. All of the lighting throughout the ride was replaced, and original 1960's incandescent fixtures were swapped out for much more advanced LED fixtures. The considerable work done throughout the ride on just the lighting and audio alone is impressive enough. But it's when your boat splashes down the second drop that the physical changes begin to make their appearance.

New props and shipwrecked boats abound in the caverns area. The Hurricane Scene, the Crew's Quarters Scene, and the Captain's Quarters Scene have all been refreshed and updated with new props and eye candy. But it's when your bateaux approaches the famous Treasure Scene that the movie makes its first big appearance.

This scene has been reworked entirely, and the actual treasure chest used in the second movie will now take up prominent residence there.

As the bateaux pass farther into the caverns, the impressive new Davy Jones mist screen effect takes place directly above the heads of passing riders below.

Originally, this was also going to be the location for a new effect with an audio-animatronic skeleton perched in the rocks above the flume, but that addition was shelved at the last minute. The timing of the new Davy Jones mist screen was more important here to help set up the plotline about to unfold, and so the skeleton was scrapped for now. He may show up in a future rehab somewhere else in the ride, perhaps next year, as WDI also wants to install a new treasure map scene in the queue

As the bateaux float out of the caverns and into the Battle Scene, here's where the movie really makes its presence known in the old ride. The Wicked Wench remains and looks just as it has for 39 years, after Jerry Bruckheimer refused to allow WDI to use the Black Pearl name or signature dark look on the pirate ship in the ride.

Same ol' ship

But while the ship is cosmetically unchanged, the dialogue here between the pirates and the animatronic defenders on the fort has been completely reworked. The original pirate captain himself has apparently retired, and in his place is a strikingly realistic animatronic version of Captain Barbossa.

As you read this WDI will have wrapped up the computer programming of this new Barbossa figure as he now shouts out lines like "It's Captain Jack Sparrow we're after, and a fortune in gold!" The new cannonball effects and new props floating in the water round out the changes to this scene.

The Dunking Scene will also look slightly different. New audio tracks are here as well, with the the pirates demanding the mayor to tell them the whereabouts of Jack Sparrow. Just beyond this scene, where there used to just be some barrels and open space, Johnny Depp himself makes his first appearance in the ride. Peeking out from behind two young giggling lasses, the first of three animatronic Jack Sparrow figures makes an appearance. Jack Sparrow doesn't have much to say here, but the sight gag the Imagineers have cooked up here is quite telling of some of the changes further along in the ride. Let's just say once you see where Mr. Depp has placed his hands on these two young ladies as he tries to get a better look at the mayor you'll realize that any hint of political correctness from 1997's infamous rehab has been thrown out the window

The famous Auction Scene is found immediately to the left of the new Sparrow figure, and the audio has been reworked here as well with a few more Sparrow references thrown in.

As the bateaux float into what used to be called the Chase Scene but was re-titled the "Gluttony Scene" for the '97 rehab, riders will notice the chase is back on and the food is gone. The additional animatronics from Epcot's old World of Motion ride that were added in '97 have been removed, and a couple of the original turntables with pirates chasing the girls have been put back in. Some of the girls will be carrying treasure and jewels as they run from the pirates but the contrived "pirates are hungry" plotline from ‘97 has mercifully been scrapped. Depp shows up again in this scene, popping up out of the barrel in place ofthe unfunny cat that had been there since '97, as the pooped pirate in front of him talks of the hidden treasure.

The Burning City Scene is mostly unchanged, although this is one area where all of that new audio and lighting equipment is really going to make a big difference. The Jail Scene will play out mostly as it always has, but the original plan to have the final Depp figure located across from the jail has been shelved in favor of having Sparrow star in his own new scene near the end of the ride.

As the bateaux float through the burning timbers and out into the Arsenal Scene, more of the 1997 additions have been removed. The original 1967 staging of this scene has been reinstalled, but with new lighting, gunfire and audio effects. Those pirates added in '97 who were trying to pull the treasure up the ramp have been removed. In their place is a vault type structure housing a brand new show scene that has been constructed on the left side of the up ramp. As the bateaux are pulled up the ramp, riders will be able to see inside this treasure vault and discover that a giddy Sparrow has found the town's treasure and evaded the pirates once and for all.

Also the entire New Orleans Square area by "Pirates" will be themed to "Pirates". There will be a pirate themed show and band playing at the "French Market" restaurant and a pirate themed show taking place on the "Sailing Ship Colombia".

There will also be a "Jack Sparrow" character walking around the area and mingling with guests.

According to Al, they've lined up quite a few actors who have really "nailed' the part of Jack Sparrow and they cant wait to unveil him to the Disneyland public. I guess we'll find out on June 26th.

Superman Returns..Sooner than expected!!

See that? Thats the weight of Warner Bros expectations for this movie he's carrying. ;-)

Word came out today that Warner Bros has bumped up the release date "Superman Returns" to June 28th. Originally scheduled to open on the 30th, Warner Bros hopes to take advantage of the extra days and bumping up that opening gross a few extra million. Speaking of millions...

X-Men: The Last Stand? (Maybe not)

Maybe they should change that claw to a dollar sign. ;-)

The third chapter of the mutant franchise shattered the record for 4 day openings taking in a whopping $122 million. For the three day Friday-Sunday period the film took in $103.1 million, making it the 4thbiggest opening of all time.

All these figures beg the question: Will FOX really pull the plug on such a lucrative franchise?? When asked about the possibility of a fourth X-Men movie, Fox's distribution head Bruce Snyder would only say "We'd start another one right now if we could."

Many of the actors arent signed for another movie and Halle Berry has stated this would be the last X-Men movie she would make. However now that her role as "Storm" has been expanded, maybe she'll change her mind? Without giving too much away, the ending for "The Last Stand" left open the possibility of another run. All I can say is STAY TUNED because in Hollywood, money talks and you can never say never!!

OK, that'll do it for now. Hopefully I can get back on track with this thing. Take care everyone and see you next time.

Misc Update

Greetings one and all! Apologies for the lack of updates. Now that work is starting to calm down a bit, I might be able to get back on track with this thing. Just a quick photo update today. I'll be putting up part 2 of "Superman vs Batman" soon so hang tight for that. Lets get to it!

Tatsu Arrives

This past weekend brought with it the highly anticipated opening of Six Flags Magic Mountain's newest coaster "Tatsu". The following photos below are courtesy of David Michael

Riders await the opportunity to ride "Tatsu"

They had a big opening event for the ride on May 11th.

Some of the first brave souls to ride Tatsu

All set to go!

Ride reviews have been mainly postive thus far and because they had the ride running at full capacity this past weekend (according to reports), the line was only 1 hour. Although it did stretch all the way down the hill past Jet Stream and towards Roaring Rapids. Lets hope Magic Mountain keeps all the trains on the track

Superman Returns Update

Warner Bros released the final movie poster for "Superman Returns" today.

Very cool

It was also announced that a 2nd trailer would be debuting in front of "X-Men 3" next week.

OK, that will do it for this update. I apologize for being so brief. Take care everyone and til the next time!
