Welcome back to the TWO MINUTE DRILL!!!
For you new readers to this blog, you might be wondering why this blog is called "The Two Minute Drill." Doesnt really have any special meaning. It was the name of my old High School column and when it came to time to start up this thing, I decided to resurrect the name once again. Also if you're new to this thing, feel free to pour over the "archives" and look at some of my older stuff. Now, on with the show.
My award show has a first name..its O-S-C-A-R!
Another Academy Awards in the books and what a show it was.
George Clooney won his first ever Oscar, for his role in "Syriana"
Does this mean he's forgiven for "Batman and Robin"?
America's Sweetheart, Reese Witherspoon won her first Oscar for her portrayal of June Carter Cash in "Walk the Line"
Raisin the roof!!
While Philip Seymour Hoffman won for best actor for "Capote"
A song with the word "Pimp" in it won for best Orginal Song.
"Its Hard Out Here For A Pimp"
And director Ang Lee won best director for "Brokeback Mountain".
Ang Lee
The biggest shocker of the night though was when it came time to give out the award for best film. About 99% of "experts" predicted "Brokeback" would be the big winner. But, in what is being called the biggest upset in Oscar's history, the film "Crash" took home the big prize.
Cathy Schulman and Paul Haggis showin off their award for "Crash"
Maybe the Academy didnt feel comfortable awarding a movie about gay men such a big award? Who knows, but judging by the stunned silence in the Kodak Theatre after the announcement was made, the decision didnt go over too well.
Controversy aside, it was a good show and one that people will be talking about for weeks to come.
Superman Returns tidbits
Some more pictures were released over the weekend.
We'll find out June 30th
Our first look at "Jimmy Olsen"
Also, in an interview in the UK, actor Kevin Spacey (Lex Luthor in the Superman movie) stated that he would indeed be returning for the sequel and possibly the third film if it is made.
Weekend Box Office
1) Tyler Perry's Madea's Family Reunion, $12.6 mil: Is the box office in a slump or what? $12.6 million for a #1 film is a very poor number. At least it didnt open that low. "Madea" is doing good business and managed to hold off the other new comers this week.
2) 16 Blocks, $11.8 mil: I heard this film being described as "Die Hard 4". In any event, Bruce Willis returns to the big screen in this thriller. I've heard good things about it.
3) Eight Below, $10.1 mil: Disney's "Dog movie" holds steady after about 3 weeks in release. Its one of the few bright spots in the otherwise horrible "Winter" movie season.
4) Ultra Violet, $9.0 mil: The weekends other big film. I think this film was too much like "Aeon Flux" for people to give it a chance. The previews looked ok, but I suspect another bomb .
5) Aquamarine, $7.4 mil: Chick flick alert!! They couldve called this movie "Splash 2" i think. ;-) There's always an audience for teen-bopper movies like this. It should do ok considering it probably didnt cost that much to make.
OK, that will do it for this update. Here's to another "fun" week! Til the next time!!
